Chochmah: Wisdom You Can Hold in Your Hands 🌙
Back in January we met chochmah as skillful living. In Exodus 31 it is something you do with your hands.

Dear friend on Tuesday evening,
Some of the wisest people you know never wrote a book. They can calm a crying baby, fix the thing that's rattling, make a meal stretch, sew a hem straight. This morning we met Bezalel, filled with the Spirit of God. Tonight, the first gift named in that same verse.
"And in the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded thee." (Exodus 31:6)
חָכְמָה
chochmah · wisdom, skill
In Exodus, the people called "wise" are weavers, spinners and metalworkers. Biblical wisdom shows up first in skilled hands.
🌟 Hebrew Focus
Back in January we met chochmah, חָכְמָה, as skillful living: the wisdom to take the next right step. Tonight Exodus 31 shows where the word does some of its first work. Bezalel is filled with the Spirit of God bechochmah, "in wisdom" (Exodus 31:3), and the wisdom is for gold, stone and timber.
Then God widens the circle. וּבְלֵב כָּל־חֲכַם־לֵב נָתַתִּי חָכְמָה, uvlev kol chakham lev natati chochmah, "and in the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom" (Exodus 31:6). The phrase chakham lev, wise of heart, runs all through these chapters, and it always describes people who make things. The garment makers are "wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom" (Exodus 28:3).
And then this: "all the women that were wise hearted did spin with their hands" (Exodus 35:25). In Hebrew, chakhmat lev beyadeha tavu: wise of heart, with her hands, she spun. The women at the spindles are called wise in the same breath as Bezalel. The Bible does not separate wisdom from work. Wisdom is a heart that knows what it is doing, showing up in what the hands make.
Proverbs 8 pictures Wisdom beside God at creation, using a rare word, amon, that many translations render "master workman" (Proverbs 8:30). And Paul calls Christ "the wisdom of God" (1 Corinthians 1:24). The skill in your hands, the meal, the mended thing, the careful work no one thanked you for, is not beneath wisdom. In Exodus, it is where wisdom first lived.

📖 The Pattern
Wisdom for the work. Bezalel is filled with the Spirit "in wisdom... and in all manner of workmanship" (Exodus 31:3).
The wise-hearted make things. "In the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom" (Exodus 31:6); "all the women that were wise hearted did spin with their hands" (Exodus 35:25).
Wisdom has a name. Wisdom beside God "as a master workman," in many translations (Proverbs 8:30), and Christ "the wisdom of God" (1 Corinthians 1:24).
🛤️ Practice
- Look at your hands. Name one thing they know how to do well.
- Read Exodus 35:25-26 aloud, and notice who is called wise.
- Say chakham lev, wise of heart, over the unseen work you did today.
- Tonight's worksheet traces the wisdom already in your hands back to its Giver.
🎯 Reflection & Prayer
Lord, I have thought of wisdom as something for scholars and leaders, and of my everyday work as something less.
But you called the spinners wise. You put wisdom in the hearts of the people who wove the curtains and shaped the gold, and Christ himself is your wisdom.
Thank you for the skill in my hands. Let the work I did today, seen or unseen, be done with a wise heart, for you. Amen.
🗣️ Transliteration & Pronunciation
The word is chochmah (khokh-MAH), חָכְמָה, wisdom, skill; the ch is the throaty sound in Bach. Wise of heart is chakham lev (khah-KHAHM LEV). In Exodus 31:3, bechochmah (beh-khokh-MAH), in wisdom.
💛 Thank you again, wynndzofchange777, for Exodus 31, which gave us a whole day: the craftsman this morning and the wisdom in his hands tonight. And thank you for reading. These notes stay free because readers pass them on, so if someone you love does careful work no one notices, send them this.
Say it once, slowly: chakham lev, wise of heart. Tomorrow morning, Laverne's Numbers 6:25, and what it means for God to make his face shine upon you. See you then.
