Bezalel: The First Person Filled with the Spirit Was a Craftsman ☀️
A reader asked for Exodus 31. Before any prophet or priest, the Spirit of God filled a man who worked metal and wood.

Dear friend on Tuesday morning,
Most of what you will do today will not feel spiritual. Emails, spreadsheets, a sink full of dishes, a car that needs fixing, a lesson plan, a patient, a shift. A reader asked for Exodus 31, and it holds a surprise about where God puts his Spirit first.
"See, I have called by name Bezaleel... and I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship." (Exodus 31:2-3)
בְּצַלְאֵל
Betzalel · in the shadow of God
The first person in the Bible said to be filled with the Spirit of God was not a prophet or a priest. He was a craftsman, and God called him by name.
🌟 Hebrew Focus
God has just given Moses the plans for the tabernacle: the ark, the lampstand, the altar, the priests' garments, all of it in exact detail. Then he names who will build it. רְאֵה קָרָאתִי בְשֵׁם בְּצַלְאֵל, re'eh karati veshem Betzalel, "See, I have called by name Bezalel, the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah" (Exodus 31:2).
Then comes a sentence the Bible has not said about anyone before. וָאֲמַלֵּא אֹתוֹ רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים, va'amale oto ruach Elohim, "and I have filled him with the Spirit of God." Joseph was a man "in whom the Spirit of God is" (Genesis 41:38), and the garment makers were filled with "the spirit of wisdom" (Exodus 28:3). Bezalel is the first person said to be filled with the Spirit of God, and the Spirit comes for a purpose: "to devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in cutting of stones... and in carving of timber" (Exodus 31:4-5).
His name is a small sermon. Betzalel, בְּצַלְאֵל, is three Hebrew pieces: be, in; tzel, צֵל, shadow or shade; and El, God. In the shadow of God. It is the same tzel as Psalm 91:1, "he that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." The man who built God's dwelling place carried in his name the place where he himself lived.
And notice the verb God uses: karati, I have called. It is the same verb God speaks over his people in Isaiah 43:1, "I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine." A calling is not only for pulpits. Jesus himself spent most of his years as a craftsman, "the carpenter" (Mark 6:3), and Paul says you are God's "workmanship" (Ephesians 2:10). The work of your hands this morning can be done in the shadow of God.

📖 The Pattern
Called by name. Re'eh karati veshem: God names the builder before a single board is cut (Exodus 31:2). The same "I have called" sounds over Israel in Isaiah 43:1.
Filled for the work. Bezalel is the first person said to be filled with the Spirit of God, "in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship" (Exodus 31:3).
The carpenter. The Son of God spent his hidden years as a craftsman (Mark 6:3), and calls us his workmanship (Ephesians 2:10).
🛤️ Practice
- Name the most ordinary piece of work on your list today.
- Read Exodus 31:2-5 aloud, and put your own work in the list after "carving of timber."
- Before you start it, say Betzalel once: in the shadow of God. Do the work there.
- This morning's worksheet walks one piece of your ordinary work into the place Bezalel worked from.
🎯 Reflection & Prayer
God, most of what I do today will not look holy. It will look like a job, a chore, a list.
But the first person you filled with your Spirit was a man with tools in his hands. You called him by name for gold and stone and timber, and you have called me by name too.
Fill the work of my hands today. Let me do it in your shadow, carefully, as to you. Amen.
🗣️ Transliteration & Pronunciation
The name is Betzalel (beh-tsahl-EL), בְּצַלְאֵל, in the shadow of God: be (beh), in; tzel (TSEL), shadow; El (EL), God. God's call is karati veshem (kah-rah-TEE veh-SHEM), "I have called by name." Exodus 31:2.
💛 Thank you, wynndzofchange777, for Exodus 31, a chapter most of us skim on the way to somewhere else, and for showing us who God filled first. And thank you for reading. These notes stay free because readers pass them on, so if someone you love thinks their work is too ordinary for God, send them this.
Say it once, slowly: Betzalel, in the shadow of God. Tonight, the first gift in that same verse, chochmah, and why in Exodus wisdom lives in your hands. See you then.
