Hebrew for Christians
א ב ג
The Hebrew alphabet in 24 steps.
One letter a day, about ten minutes, in the Bible you already own. By the last day you can read the first word of Genesis, and the Hebrew under every verse stops being a picture.
אָב
av, father. Your first Hebrew word, with two letters.
טוֹב
tov, good, as in “and God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:4).
אֱלֹהִים
Elohim, God, in the first verse of the Bible.
אָבִינוּ
Avinu, our Father, the first word of the Lord’s Prayer.
שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל
Shema Yisrael, Hear, O Israel, the words Jesus called the first commandment.
בְּרֵאשִׁית
bereshit, in the beginning, the first word of the Bible.
Day 24 brings no new letter. You read a whole verse of Psalm 119, then Genesis 1:1.
Open to Psalm 119. Above the first verse, your Bible almost certainly prints a word: Aleph. Eight verses later, Beth. Then Gimel, Daleth, He. Twenty-two headings for twenty-two sections, and every verse in a section begins with that letter. The psalm is the alphabet.
You have read past those headings for years. Holy Letters uses one section a day, so each letter is one you find with your own eyes, in your own Bible.
One letter
Its name, its sound, and a one-minute recording so you hear it said.
The letter with each vowel
Five short sounds, then real words made only from letters you already know.
Find it in your Bible
Open Psalm 119 to that letter’s section. Every verse there begins with it.
Two minutes of practice
Trace it once in the margin. About ten minutes in all.
